“Fitness isn’t for me”
Do these sound familiar?
“I’m not cut out for this”, “I don’t enjoy exercising”, “I’ve only ever had bad experiences”.
We hear lots of stories from people who have decided that fitness just isn't for them.
They genuinely think they won't ever enjoy exercise, they don't belong in a fitness environment and they are just "not cut out for it". Usually, that decision has come from having a really awful experience along the way.
A terrible experience in the gym or with exercise can literally put you off it for life. And if I had ONE THING I would say we were the most passionate about in APEX it would be to just show the people who've had a terrible experience with exercise that it absolutely doesn't have to be that way.
Maybe it's from trying something far too advanced, feeling pressure to maintain an unrealistic training schedule, being pushed to do something that isn't right for you, feeling judged by someone, getting hurt, having a really rough experience as a kid a school/with sport, feeling like the only way to "get fit" is to be drenched in sweat/gasping for air/puking or being told you absolutely need to weigh yourself and remove all joy from your lifestyle and diet....
“Bad experiences push us away from movement and make us think we ‘obviously aren’t cut out for it’.”
It pushes us away from finding ways of exercising we enjoy. It stops us from literally adding years to our life, improving our quality of life and it makes us feel like health and fitness is utterly unattainable. It makes us feel like we don't belong. A bad experience can be absolutely catastrophic.
“If you could bottle the benefits that we get from healthy, consistent exercise it would be the best selling bottle of magic known to man.”
Increased confidence, stronger bones, longer life expectancy, better quality of life, injury prevention, staying mobile and strong into old age, heart health, better/more stable moods, better sleep, better body composition, increased capability.... The list goes on.
When you find something you love doing, that doesn't feel like a chore, that doesn't cause you pain, that doesn't force you to push until you're scraping yourself off the floor, that doesn't make you feel judged, that doesn't make you feel like you don't belong... I cannot begin to describe how that could change your life.
If you've had a terrible experience with exercise, we promise there is another way.
I've actually been there myself. I've been told "well this is just what you need to do, if you're not up for it then so be it."
I've felt like I've been cast aside and judged just because I didn't want to run on a treadmill for 30 minutes, do burpees until I felt sick and eat dry salad....
Looking back now it's absolute madness but 16 years ago I didn't know any better. I thought that's what it took so I was stuck in a perpetual cycle of forcing it, hating it, failing at it and sacking it off.
Thankfully, I found strength training. I found compassionate coaches to guide me and I became obsessed with learning everything I could along the way. And with that came the obsession with trying to make anyone and everyone see that feeling strong, fit and healthy belongs to EVERYONE. Even you who thinks you're not cut out for it....
Infact, especially you .
